WOOCOMMERCE → SHOPIFY
Moving from WooCommerce to Shopify
Your store, blog and customer accounts move over. The plugin upkeep stays behind.
WooCommerce turns WordPress into a store. As the store grows, so do the number of plugins, the effort that goes into updates and the demands on hosting. When you move to Shopify, we bring over products, variants, customer accounts, orders, coupons and your WordPress content. We replace plugins with Shopify features or apps, and every old URL gets a redirect. Your WooCommerce store keeps selling until the new store is fully tested.

WHY STORES SWITCH
Why stores move from WooCommerce to Shopify
- Less upkeep
- WordPress, WooCommerce and every plugin get their own updates, and they all have to work together. On Shopify, Shopify takes care of updates, security and hosting.
- Traffic peaks without server planning
- Newsletter, influencer post or Black Friday: Shopify handles more visitors without you having to adjust servers or caching.
- Features without custom builds
- Checkout, payment methods, multiple languages and currencies come with Shopify. Much more is available as apps maintained by their developers.
DATA AND STRUCTURE
How WooCommerce data maps to Shopify
Most data has a direct counterpart in Shopify. The extra work is mainly in variants, pages built with page builders, and URLs.
| In WooCommerce | In Shopify | |
|---|---|---|
| Products and variants | Simple and variable products, variations from any number of attributes. | Products with up to three options (such as size, color, material) and up to 2,048 variants. Other attributes become metafields. |
| Categories and tags | Product categories, nested if needed, and tags. | Collections, curated by hand or automated by rules, plus tags. The nesting is reflected in the menu. |
| Customer accounts | WordPress users with billing and shipping addresses. | Customer accounts with addresses and orders. Sign-in with a one-time code instead of a password. |
| Orders | Orders with status, line items and notes. | Imported orders with date, line items and amounts. |
| Coupons | WooCommerce coupons. | Discount codes with conditions, and automatic discounts. |
| Blog and pages | WordPress posts and pages, often built with a page builder. | Shopify blog and pages. We rebuild page-builder layouts with theme sections. |
| SEO data | Titles and descriptions, usually from Yoast or Rank Math. | SEO title and description for every product, collection and page. |
| URLs | /product/…, /product-category/… and posts based on your permalinks. | /products/…, /collections/…, /pages/… and /blogs/…, with a 301 redirect from every old URL. |
| Plugins | Plugins for legal requirements, subscriptions, product options, reviews and more. | Shopify features or apps. Some aren't needed because Shopify already has them built in. |

Overview
Frequently asked questions about moving from WooCommerce to Shopify
You have really good questions, and we have found answers to them. Is your question not included? Scroll down and get in touch with Eric!
Can we keep WordPress for our blog?
Yes, for example with the blog on its own subdomain. In most cases, though, we move the blog and pages to Shopify too. That way your team manages everything in one place, and the content sits on the same domain as the store.
What happens to our WooCommerce plugins?
We go through your plugin list at the start. There are Shopify apps for reviews, subscriptions, product options and legal requirements. Payment methods, shipping rules and SEO fields are built into Shopify. You won't need plugins for caching or security anymore, because Shopify takes care of hosting and updates.
Will our URLs stay the same?
No, Shopify uses its own patterns. /product/backpack/ becomes /products/backpack, and /product-category/bags/ becomes /collections/bags. Every old URL gets a 301 redirect to its new address. We keep the readable names in your URLs wherever we can.
Do you migrate product reviews too?
Yes. We move your reviews into a reviews app, so stars and texts stay on your product pages.
Do our customers have to sign up again?
No. Customer accounts with their addresses and orders move over, only the passwords don't. For security reasons they can't be transferred to any other system. On Shopify, customers sign in with a one-time code sent to their email. We'll prepare a short email for you that tells customers about the move.
How much does moving from WooCommerce to Shopify cost?
It depends on the number of products and variants, the plugins that need replacing, pages built with page builders, subscriptions and integrations such as an ERP, and whether you keep your design or want a new one. In a free 30-minute intro call, we estimate effort and timeline for your store.
When are you better off staying on WooCommerce?
When your store is closely tied to WordPress, for example as part of a large magazine or a membership site, and you have a team that likes running WordPress. WooCommerce can also be the right fit for very specific processes you've built yourselves. We'll work that out in the intro call.
