MAGENTO → SHOPIFY
Moving from Magento to Shopify
For established stores with many attributes, customer groups and integrations.
Magento can do a lot, whether as Open Source or as Adobe Commerce. In return, it needs its own hosting, regular version upgrades and developers who know the system. When you move to Shopify, we transfer products with their attributes, customer accounts, orders and content, rebuild customer groups and special prices, connect your ERP and other systems, and redirect every old URL. Your Magento store keeps selling until the new store is tested.

WHY STORES SWITCH
Why stores move from Magento to Shopify
- No more version upgrades
- Security updates only cover current Magento versions, and every major upgrade is a project of its own. Shopify updates itself.
- No hosting of your own
- Servers, caching, search and traffic peaks are handled by Shopify. Your team works on the store, not the infrastructure.
- New features go live faster
- Much of what needs its own module in Magento is a setting, a theme section or an app in Shopify.
DATA AND STRUCTURE
How Magento data maps to Shopify
Magento and Shopify think about products differently. Magento supports any number of attributes and several product types, Shopify works with variants and metafields. This translation decides whether filters, product pages and feeds work again afterwards.
| In Magento | In Shopify | |
|---|---|---|
| Product types | Simple, configurable, bundle and grouped products. | Products with variants. Bundles and sets via Shopify's Bundles app or another app. |
| Attributes | Any number of attributes, grouped in attribute sets. | Up to three options for variants, all other attributes as metafields. Filters are built on these, too. |
| Filters and search | Layered navigation and search on your own hosting. | Filters and search via Shopify's Search & Discovery app, or a search app if needed. |
| Customer groups and pricing | Customer groups with their own prices, tiered prices and special prices. | Shopify's B2B features with company accounts, catalogs and volume pricing, plus apps. |
| Countries and languages | Websites, stores and store views. | Shopify Markets with languages, currencies and prices per country, or several stores if needed. |
| Customer accounts | Customer accounts with address book and customer group. | Customer accounts with addresses and orders. Sign-in with a one-time code instead of a password. |
| Content | CMS pages, blocks and widgets. | Pages and theme sections your team edits in the theme editor. |
| Extensions | Third-party modules and custom modules. | Shopify apps or custom apps built on Shopify's APIs. |
| URLs | SEO URLs, often with .html and a category path. | /products/… and /collections/…, with a 301 redirect from every old URL. |

CASE STUDY
Hagel: the app moves from Magento to Shopify
When Hagel, one of Germany's largest suppliers of hair care and salon products, moved from Magento to Shopify, we migrated their shopping app. It now pulls products, prices and the cart straight from Shopify, and payment runs through Shopify checkout. The biggest task: rebuilding Hagel's free gifts, which customers get depending on what's in their cart, in Shopify.
- launch as the new Shopify store
- Same day
- products the app loads from Shopify
- ≈ 30,000

Overview
Frequently asked questions about moving from Magento to Shopify
You have really good questions, and we have found answers to them. Is your question not included? Scroll down and get in touch with Eric!
Is switching worth it for large Magento stores too?
Often, yes, especially when a major version upgrade is coming up that will take a lot of effort anyway. Shopify Plus handles large catalogs, many countries and B2B. If your business depends on very specific logic built deep into Magento, we'll work out in the intro call whether the rebuild pays off.
We're still on Magento 1. Does that work too?
Yes. Magento 1 hasn't received updates since mid-2020, so moving is especially urgent. The data can still be transferred, the same way as from Magento 2.
Can we keep using our ERP?
In most cases, yes. Many ERP systems have ready-made connectors for Shopify. Where they don't, we connect them through Shopify's APIs. What matters is deciding up front which system leads on stock, prices and orders.
Will our URLs stay the same?
No. /women/shoes/sneaker-luna.html, for example, becomes /products/sneaker-luna, and /women/shoes.html becomes /collections/womens-shoes. Every old URL gets a 301 redirect to its new address.
How do we handle several countries and languages?
With Shopify Markets: one store for several countries, with their own languages, currencies and prices. If your countries have very different catalogs or their own teams, separate stores can make sense. We settle this in the data model.
Do our customers have to sign up again?
No. Accounts, addresses and orders move over. Passwords can't be transferred, so on Shopify customers sign in with a one-time code sent to their email.
How much does moving from Magento to Shopify cost?
It depends mainly on your catalog and attributes, customer groups and B2B pricing, the number of countries and languages, your integrations and the custom modules that need replacing. In a free 30-minute intro call, we estimate effort and timeline for your store.
